ANSWERS TO COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about getting started, programs, private lessons, youth ballroom, wedding lessons, performances, policies, and more.

How do I get started?

The best place to begin depends on your age and goals. Adults can start with our $49 Introductory Special, which includes two personalized 30-minute private lessons. Junior and Youth dancers can begin with the appropriate ballroom program and introductory class. If you are unsure which option fits you, contact us and we will be happy to help.

Do I need any dance experience?

Not at all. Many of our students begin with little or no dance experience. Our instructors will meet you at your current level and guide you forward one approachable step at a time.

Do I need a partner?

No. You are welcome to participate without a partner. Private students may learn directly with an instructor, and partners are provided or rotated as appropriate during group instruction.

What should I wear? Do I need dance shoes?

Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily. Shoes that stay securely on your feet and allow you to move safely are best. Ballroom shoes are not required when you begin, but your instructor can recommend appropriate dance shoes when you are ready. Stiletto or metal heels are not permitted on the studio floor.

Do you offer ballroom classes for children and teenagers?

Yes. Our Junior Ballroom program serves dancers ages 8–12, and our Youth Ballroom program serves dancers ages 12–18. Placement for 12-year-old dancers may depend on their maturity, experience, and individual goals.

What dances can I learn?

We teach a wide variety of partner dances, including Ballroom, Latin and Rhythm, West Coast Swing, and Country styles. Your instructor will help you choose dances that match your interests, experience, music preferences, and goals.

What is the difference between group classes and private lessons?

Group classes allow students to learn alongside others in a scheduled class environment. Private lessons provide personalized instruction focused on your individual goals, learning style, and pace. Many dancers benefit from combining private instruction with group classes when appropriate.

How do I schedule a private lesson?

Adults who are new to the studio can schedule the first lesson of the $49 Introductory Special online. Current students and dancers with specific instructor requests may contact the studio or coordinate scheduling directly with their instructor.

When are private lessons available?

Private lessons are scheduled by appointment based on studio and instructor availability. If the available introductory times do not work for you, call or text us and we will help find another option.

What does the $49 Introductory Special include?

The $49 Introductory Special includes two personalized 30-minute private ballroom dance lessons. The online calendar schedules the first lesson, and your instructor will help coordinate the second lesson.

Can couples take private lessons together?

Yes. Couples can learn together for social dancing, date nights, special occasions, or simply to enjoy a new activity together. Lessons will be personalized around your shared goals and experience.

Do you offer wedding dance lessons?

Yes. Wedding dance lessons are personalized for each couple. We can help you feel comfortable dancing together, learn a simple and natural first dance, or develop more detailed choreography based on your music, timeline, and goals.

What should we wear to a wedding dance lesson?

Wear comfortable clothing and shoes that allow you to move safely. You do not need to wear your wedding attire to your first lesson. As the wedding approaches, your instructor may recommend practicing in shoes and clothing similar to what you plan to wear during the wedding.

What if I already have dance experience?

Experienced dancers are welcome. Your instructor will evaluate your current knowledge and help you continue developing your technique, partnership, musicality, performance skills, or competitive dancing.

What are “lead” and “follow” roles?

Partner dancing uses lead and follow roles to create communication between two dancers. Either person may learn either role. If you have a preferred role or would like to explore both, let your instructor know.

Do I have to rotate partners in a group class?

Partner rotation is encouraged because dancing with different people can strengthen lead-and-follow skills and help students become more adaptable. If you prefer not to rotate partners, let the instructor know before class.

What is the Youth Solo Star Program?

The Youth Solo Star Program allows dancers to develop and showcase their ballroom technique, choreography, musicality, and performance skills without needing a partner. It can help students build confidence and prepare for performances or competition.

Can I perform or compete without having a partner?

Yes. Youth dancers may have opportunities through the Solo Star Program. Adult students may participate in Pro/Am events, where a student performs or competes with a professional instructor. Contact us to discuss the options that fit your interests and goals.

What is the difference between American and International ballroom styles?

American Smooth and Rhythm allow dancers to explore open movement and are commonly used in American social and competitive dancing. International Standard and Latin follow internationally recognized competitive structures and place a strong emphasis on technique, partnership, and specific style characteristics. The Phoenix Ballroom Academy teaches both systems.

What is the studio practice policy?

Practice opportunities depend on the student’s current program, lesson plan, studio schedule, and available floor space. Please ask your instructor about the practice options included with your program before coming to the studio specifically to practice.

What are your cancellation, refund, and lesson-expiration policies?

Cancellation, refund, and expiration terms may depend on the program, package, or service purchased. The applicable terms will be provided when you enroll or purchase lessons. Please review your agreement or contact the studio if you have questions about a specific purchase.
