Ross Pearce’s connection to performance began with music. He started piano lessons as a child and continued developing his musicality through musical theatre and show choir. Those early experiences taught him to hear rhythm, understand performance, and connect movement with music—skills that would later shape both his dancing and his teaching.
His interest in performance led him to study dance at Utah Valley State College (now Utah Valley University) and Brigham Young University. There, he developed a broad technical foundation in ballroom, ballet, jazz, and modern dance. Ballroom became the place where his love of music, movement, partnership, and performance came together.
Over more than three decades, Ross has experienced ballroom dance from nearly every side of the floor—as a student, professional competitor, performer, instructor, coach, and national-level adjudicator. He has taught dancers ranging from complete beginners to advanced competitors in American Smooth, American Rhythm, International Standard, International Latin, Country Western, and Cabaret and Theatre Arts.
Ross founded The Phoenix Ballroom Academy to create a dedicated place where dancers could receive knowledgeable, individualized instruction and continue growing as their goals changed. Today, he works with children, teens, adults, wedding couples, social dancers, and competitive students. His teaching combines strong technical foundations with musicality, personal attention, and a genuine commitment to helping every dancer make meaningful progress.
Ross believes excellent teaching begins by understanding the individual. Every dancer arrives with different experience, goals, strengths, and challenges, so instruction should never feel like a generic lesson plan. He meets students where they are, explains concepts clearly, and gives them a purposeful path forward.
Strong technique is at the center of his teaching. Rather than simply memorizing routines, students learn how and why movement works—including timing, musicality, posture, balance, partnering, and movement quality. These foundations help dancers progress with greater confidence and allow their dancing to continue developing as their goals become more advanced.
Ross’s training as a Master Massage Practitioner also gives him an unusually detailed understanding of anatomy, muscular function, alignment, and movement. He uses that knowledge to help students move more efficiently, recognize how their bodies create movement, and improve coordination, balance, mobility, and overall movement quality. This perspective is especially valuable when a dancer understands what a step should look like but needs help discovering how to make it work within their own body.
Ross combines high standards with patience, encouragement, and respect for each dancer’s pace. Whether he is teaching a child beginning ballroom, an adult preparing to dance socially, a wedding couple, or an experienced competitor, his goal is the same: to help every student become a more knowledgeable, capable, and confident dancer.

Ross Pearce earned the designation of USA Dance National Judge through extensive experience evaluating dancers at ballroom competitions, including the USA Dance National Championships.
The National Judge designation reflects substantial adjudicating experience at recognized ballroom competitions. It was earned through Ross’s work on the judging floor—not simply awarded through a certification examination.
Ross has judged dancers at multiple levels, including at the USA Dance National Championships. This experience requires the ability to evaluate technique, timing, musicality, partnering, movement quality, presentation, and competitive performance.
Adjudicating gives Ross a clear understanding of what judges see and how dancers are evaluated. He brings that perspective into his coaching, helping competitive students understand not only what to improve, but which changes will make the greatest difference in their dancing and presentation.
That trained eye also benefits social dancers, wedding couples, and beginners by allowing Ross to identify details quickly, explain corrections clearly, and help each student progress more efficiently.
Ross holds Fellow-level professional certifications through the United States Terpsichore Association in all four major competitive ballroom styles. Fellow is the organization’s highest examined professional level, demonstrating advanced knowledge of practical dancing, theory, technique, and teaching.
